Mediatree – 2 years of Carbon Neutral Plus status (and we aren’t stopping there…)

I – How is Mediatree carbon neutral plus? Defining carbon neutrality plus

We are incredibly proud to announce that Mediatree has achieved Carbon Neutral Plus status for the second consecutive year, with a 61.49% carbon emission reduction from 2020 to 2021.

While Carbon neutrality characterizes a person or a company that succeeds in neutralising its CO22e, Mediatree went one step further to have a positive impact on the environment, thus earning the status of Carbon Neutral Plus.

To achieve such a status, Mediatree went on a yearlong process to determine the best strategy for us and the environment. This consisted of calculating, mitigating and offsetting our CO2e, with 2020’s figures in mind.

Being carbon neutral plus year in year out is one thing. Being carbon plus neutral while managing to reduce our absolute market-based emissions by 61.49% with respect to 2020 is something altogether more noteworthy. Put 2020 and 2021’s economic activity in perspective and it becomes a meaningful achievement; a symbol of Mediatree’s strong commitment to the environment.

II – Why hasn’t Mediatree communicated about Carbon Neutrality Plus last year? A question of timing

There are two main reasons why Mediatree decided not to communicate about its carbon neutrality plus for 2020.

  1. 2020 was a challenging year for everyone. This second consecutive year of the COVID-19 pandemic, just like the first one, was synonymous with isolation, restrictions, travel bans, zoom calls … every aspect of our society was affected. Just like every other business in the world, Mediatree had to adapt to the situation and left the office, enforced homeworking for its employees, and digitised its activities. This forced adaptation had the positive effect of considerably reducing our CO2e, thus rendering carbon neutrality plus a more straightforward task than it might otherwise have been.
  2. Although carbon neutrality is only a way of compensating for a company or individual’s carbon footprint as opposed to reducing and then erasing it, we see it is a critical first step for the future of our company. We also see it as something that should be the status quo in our industry and beyond. We believed that carbon neutrality shouldn’t be a communication opportunity as much as it should be the norm and decided to remain silent.

III – Why communicate this year? Because carbon neutrality isn’t the norm… yet

So why communicate it now? For the same reason we decided not to communicate about it before. Carbon neutrality should be a norm in our industry.

Unfortunately, Investor Relations activities produce negative externalities which have detrimental effects on the health of our planet. To address these, carbon neutrality must become a non-negotiable in our industry. But it is not … yet.

As a result, this time round, we have decided to speak up. To reaffirm that it is Mediatree’s ambition to make carbon neutrality the norm for us and our industry. Reducing our emissions by more than half shows that Mediatree is on the right track. We want to share our story, generate momentum, and inspire others to join the carbon neutral community. To reiterate, carbon neutrality is not enough, but it is a key first step on the road to decarbonisation.

True to our values, Mediatree is more than willing to assist any company looking to achieve a carbon neutral certification. Do not hesitate to reach out to our sustainability team who will be delighted to help.

Lastly, after successfully developing GreenerRoadshowsTM and achieving carbon neutrality plus status for the second year running, we are hopeful of having more good news to share in the coming weeks and months. Watch this space!
